Soccer fever grips Ghanaian women

CUE: For many, football is traditionally a man’s game. Men dominate soccer on the field, in the galleries and in beer halls where the beautiful game is celebrated. But that may be changing. In Ghana, not only are women a force to contend with on the playing field, but they are also becoming passionate supporters. Football fever has clearly gripped Ghanaian women. What could have brought about this dramatic change? Radio Ghana’s Rosemary Gaisie finds out more.

NARRATOR: These are voices of enthusiastic Ghanaian women football supporters singing the praise of their national soccer team. It doesn’t matter that the Black Stars are the men’s side. The Black Stars lived up to their formidable reputation by becoming the first African team to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Women supporters could not be left out in the celebrations that swept the West African nation. Just listen to these female students from the University of Ghana here in the nation’s capital, Accra.
