Nigeria vs North Korea

Nikki Rixon/TwentyTen

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa

A friendly between Nigeria and North Korea on June 6 ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup turned ugly when desperate fans stampeded the gates outside the stadium, and several people were injured.

Despite a heavy police presence, keen supporters were trampled underfoot by Nigerian fans desperate to get into the 10,000-seater stadium. Some ticket-holders were even turned away when the police attempted to control the crowd and prevent any further casualties. After receiving information about the stampede, the match commissioner stopped the game minutes into the second half. Following several minutes of deliberation, the match was allowed to continue.

The Tembisa Stadium is not one of the well-equipped and sturdy structures that were purpose built for the World Cup. It has concrete terraces and is surrounded by a fence, and has gates instead of turnstiles.
