Izangoma

In this day and age of fractured and fading traditions, the need to remember our roots is increasingly important. Remembrance is well illustrated by the sangomas of Khayelitsha.

Sangomas are the healers of the community - imparters of knowledge gained from the ancestors. In order for initiates to become sangomas, their ancestors must visit them in a dream. Once this rite of passage has been achieved, the celebrations last for three days and three nights.

Female sangomas are as prevalent as their male counterparts - their strength can clearly be seen in their singing, dancing and interaction with other participants.

During these sacred festivities, they celebrate life and reinforce the link between the past and the present. As an observer, sitting in the midst of the proceedings, the air of inclusion and welcome is tangible. Below are images of Sangomas available for licensing.
