Handmade jewellery

by Marinda Louw. All images are model released.

Goldsmiths and stone setters work together to produce hand-made jewellery. Gold nuggets are smelted in crucibles and cast into bars or other shapes. These shapes are then 'molded' to create thin wires or flat surfaces from which rings and plates are made. Setters will then set the precious stones into the metal shanks (or frames) the goldsmiths created. After the item is finished, it is polished or rhodium-plated. White gold is normally a grey colour and will be rhodium plated to give it a bright silver sheen.
