Bukom Survival

A feature from the Soccer World Cup 2010: Ghana

Emmanuel Quaye/Twenty Ten

Bukom is a small tribal community located on the outskirts of Ghana’s capital Accra. Inspite of its small size Bukom has a huge reputation for producing world boxing champions like Ike Quartey,Azumah Nelson and D.K.Poison and Joshua Clottey.
It has also produced many other successful boxers ,most of whom ply their trade in America. But besides boxing many young boys also strive day and night to achieve their dreams of becoming great football stars in the future.
This is a survival story of Joseph Nii Teiko Tackie, 18, a ball boy and his collegues from Bukom who are aspiring to become great footballers in future. They have to sweat day and night to make ends meet to make their dreams come true.He was dismissed a year ago from the Odartey Lamptey Junior High School for missing classes, following his friends to play football .He now stays without schooling .”I am waiting for next academic year in September to start schooling again” he said .Joseph Nii Teiko Tackie plays for Barcelona Football Club, colts team and dreams of becoming an International Star, like Michael Ballack.
