The Piper Collection

Eastern Cape, South Africa

This collection represents the unique photographic and cine film work of Dr. Pauline Ingle at All Saints Hospital and Engcobo in the Eastern Cape between 1949-1976. The acronym Piper stands for the Pauline Ingle Photographic Evaluation and Realisation project as recently initiated by her husband Dr. Ronald Ingle, who donated the collection to the University of Fort Hare. It consists of more than 4,000 images including slides and negatives. The photographs depicts lives that are changing, however much they sometimes seems to have remained unchanged. It is the legacy of a woman who quite obviously was able to transcend the barriers of race, class and disability, a woman whose warmth and compassion was returned with the trust of the people she photographed so intimately. A woman who was known in the community as Nowethu (meaning Ours). The collection also demonstrates a remarkable sensitivity to gender and to the agency of the women that made arid sustained the communities seen in the collection.

Over 1000 images from The Piper Collection are available on Africa Media Online, click here to view them all.
