The name John Hone (10 April 1947 – 1 May 2012) is well recognised among those who are passionate about the uKhalamba Drakensberg in South Africa. John was avidly concerned with the protection and preservation of this World Heritage Site. For more than 30 years John recorded the landscapes of South Africa's beautiful environment.
"John Hone was married to Barbara and father to Gareth and Carryn. He was an author, photographer, astute businessman and the major shareholder in Art Publishers for over 30 years until he was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2008. Art Publishers is a successful, leading company that produce predominately souvenir products for the tourist market, including a range of high quality image based books that showcase the people, the places and the wildlife of South Africa.
Perhaps John was best known as a forerunner in large format scenic photography in this country. He was an avid hiker with a love for the mountains and wilderness. He combined this with his passion for photography and the conservation of the Drakensberg Mountains of the KwaZulu Natal region, its fauna, flora and the San rock art heritage.
He leaves a legacy in his photographic work spanning many decades, but in particular in his magnificent, acclaimed book, Encounters with the Dragon, a culmination of over twenty years of photography - a collection of stories, the history, the people, the places and events." (Tribute by Peter Brigg, 28/05/2012)
Over 350 of John Hone's images are available on Africa Media Online.
